Peace was finally restored
The last day ended peacefully, even with a lot of tension on the way.
The morning at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) started on fire with breaking news: a soviet ship carrying food and medical supplements to North Vietnam had disappeared. Later, the ship was found and the remains of a North American missile were discovered after the investigation. The US Defense of State claims not to have commanded any such military mission. "You are trying to blame the victims", said the delegate of the Soviet Union about the speeches of some delegates. The Crisis Resolution was a document that requested all sides and their allies to stop the conflict, promoting a ceasefire.
After the resolution of this problem, in the afternoon, the representations of South and North Vietnam attended the fifth session. With a clash of ideas and statements such like South Vietnam's - "Communism doesn't see the individuality" - and also North Vietnam's - "We want to be free" -, the debate was entering a repetitive circle. With so many twists and turns, the focus of the debate was often lost, and delegates from Sudan, Austria, Peru and Yugoslavia were asked several times for the resolution to be discussed.
During the Press Conference, the nations of the United States of America, Soviet Union and France Republic were asked to participate. The Soviet Union was asked about where the financial resources for the peacekeeping missions would come from, but the delegate said that she does not agree with these missions and, for her reason, they would not happen. France, on the other hand, was asked about the infinite non-moderated debates that went nowhere. The delegate claims that, in her opinion, the debates were extremely productive and important to understand some specific points that were fundamental to the proposed resolution. The question addressed to the United States is related to the crisis. No investigation was proposed by the delegation to discover the real origin of the incident with the Soviet ship, and as it is one of those suspected of causing it, why would it not be in the country's interest that more details about what happened were discovered? The delegate claims that the Americans were never against the investigations.
In the last and sixth session, finally the delegates moved their focus to start writing a Resolution Proposal. While they discussed even more about the actions of peacekeeping, they also started to commit a paper on the matter of a new parallel that was suggested to divide Vietnam in a fair way, based on the point of some delegates that still weren’t satisfied with the territory division. However, the extension proposal was rejected by North Vietnam. By the end of the session, the United Nations Military Observer Mission to Vietnam (UNMOMV) was approved. The commission had as their priority the aim to achieve the ceasefire on both sides.
Therefore, the second and last day of this committee ended with a plausible resolution, as expected since the first day. The Communication Agency was gladly satisfied with the hard work that appeared in the committee from the Chair and the Delegations of UNSC.
